So what's the secret? Besides an exceptionally talented die maker, one of our secrets is the finish - hard enamel versus soft. But here's what many in the industry don't want you to know; soft enamel isn't really enamel at all. It's just paint over the pressed ridges made by the die. Hard enamel is actually ground glass that is poured into each coin then fire baked.
With paper/conceptual artwork it can be hard to discern the difference. But, in person, when comparing the final product side to side, the end result is striking.
So then why would anyone use soft enamel? Because it's cheap! Some of our competitors actually prefer it because they know you probably don't know the difference. This is another part of the hook. Along with playing down a die fee, art fee and set up that will arrive as a separate charge - or "forgetting" to mention they charge you extra for each color, it's all part of quoting a very low per unit price.
